What Dog Food is Harming Our Furry Friends?

It appears that sixteen brands of dog food may be linked to an increased risk of heart failure in our canine companions, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although the FDA has not yet suggested that pet owners stop feeding certain brands to their dogs, some veterinarians are already advising against grain-free foods. Xylitol, a sweetener found in candy, chewing gum, toothpaste, baked goods, and some diet foods, can cause a dog's blood sugar to drop and lead to liver failure. The initial symptoms of xylitol poisoning include vomiting, lethargy, and coordination problems.

Over time, your pup may experience seizures. Unfortunately, this was the case with some dogs that ate the affected types of Prescription Diet and Science Diet canned dog food, according to some customers. Veterinary cardiologists have informed NBC News that they are not waiting for the FDA investigation to conclude before advising owners to stop feeding suspect pet food. The FDA is currently investigating more than 500 reports that appear to link dog foods marketed as grain-free to canine dilated cardiomyopathy.

This allows manufacturers to make their food from by-products such as hooves, tails, testicles, ears, etc. All I know is that my dog was perfectly healthy, just like my daughter's dog, and now my dog will be sick for the rest of his life. Gelzer isn't sure what the results will be if those early-stage dogs switch to a different food. Pets may smell the food inside the bags or simply be curious about the bag itself and stick their heads inside.

I've been giving my baby dry food and he usually has a voracious appetite, but now he's losing it for the past few days. Most of the reports were associated with dry food formulations for dogs, but raw, semi-moist and wet foods were included. In some cases, pet owners report that some dog foods are killing or making dogs sick because they contain the wrong nutrients. Dogs can be opportunistic when it comes to eating tasty treats, but not all everyday foods and beverages are safe if they come in contact with them.

You can ensure that your dog has a healthy and balanced diet by asking your vet to suggest a quality dog food.
